Karolina's adventure with music started at the age of six when she took her first piano lessons. At the end of primary music school, in spite of all stereotypes, she chose alto saxophone as her second instrument and decided to leave her hometown Dębno to continue her musical education in Poznań.
Being only 13 years old, she was already living in a boarding school. Because of open position of a tenor saxophonist in a female saxophone quartet that she was willing to join, Karolina switched to tenor saxophone. This move made her also realise that the strong sound of tenor saxophone truly suits her.
As a 16-year-old saxophonist, Karolina was already a promising musician, who participated in international jazz workshops. Her mature sound was an effect of not only her hard work, but also of hundreds of recordings she diligently listened to. In her play, the echo of her greatest inspirations can be heard, such as: John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, Bob Berg, Branford Marsalis and Chris Potter.
She is a graduate of Jazz Department at the Music Academy in Wrocław.
ARTISTIC AND PERFORMING ACTIVITIES
Through the years of her performing activities, she has had a chance to play with: Diane Reeves, Jackie Dankworth, Grażyna Łobaszewska, Janusz Szrom, Maciej Sikała, Piotr Wojtasik, Krzysztof Kiliański, Henryk Miśkiewicz, Wojciech Myrczek, Zbigniew Lewandowski, and Piotr Baron. She regularly performs with the Big Band of the University of Zielona Góra, Bartosz Pernal Orchestra, the Silesian Jazz Orchestra, SaxArte Quartet, and she also cooperates with the Wrocław Comedy Theater and the Capitol Musical Theater in Wrocław.
What distinguishes her from male dominated industry is not only her gender but also her great sensitivity. Karolina was recognized and appreciated by juries of various competitions like Tarnów Azoty International Jazz Contest or Łomża Jazz Festival. Even though she is strongly committed to jazz genre, she is still searching for her musical identity.
In 2018, Karolina Pernal recorded her debut album Claridad.
Apart from music, Karolina has a degree in Italian and Spanish languages and as a result of her linguistic and cultural interest, she mostly cookes pasta dominated dishes.
